Monica Tranter and Tranter Pilates: The Principles

Monica Tranter created and built Tranter Pilates over 20 years ago when Pilates was just coming out of New York and a select few instructors were bringing the new technique to Canada and the world in the mid 1990 ‘s. Having a large amount of injuries form a professional dance career Monica began her Pilates practice and has not stopped since her modest beginnings. The Tranter Pilates method is based on three principles: 1) Pilates must be both authentic and modern; 2) The essence of Pilates is functional fitness; 3) the integration of an extensive series of preparatory exercises that will fuel your daily activity and impact how you move on a daily basis. Monica Tranter Pilates technique is a lifestyle not a fad!.

Joseph Pilates tried to create the Greek ideal of a man who is balanced in body, mind, and spirit. His experiences taught him to believe that the daily life-style, bad posture, and inefficient breathing were the base of poor health. His answer to these problems was to design a singular series of life changing physical and psychological exercises that help to correct muscular imbalances and improve posture, coordination, balance, strength, and flexibility, as well as to increase breathing capacity and organ function.  His goal was in whatever you do you must use the WHOLE body! 

Monica and the Tranter Pilates technique follows the same tradition of the original method created by Joseph Pilates. Monica Tranter with the knowledge and training of Pilates elder Lawrence Hayward has designed a program that will work the whole body from a beginner to advanced level of fitness using not only his series of exercises but other movements, corrective and preparatory work done at Joseph Pilates Studio.

Monica Tranter Pilates in working with Lawrence Hayward (Joseph Pilates’ first student teacher) will bring you to the top physical and mental condition with a never offered full body routine as done in the Pilates Studio.  Many new Pilates clients do not know that Joseph Pilates never instructed group classes, but used one on one instruction exclusively.  Tranter Pilates focuses on individual needs and on correcting imbalances within the body through the newest in Pilates exercises while maintaining the original Pilates principles for health and well being.

Joseph Pilates was an inventor and a creator. His system evolved daily and continues to change with the new education on anatomy, posture, organ functioning and breathing.  Joseph in working with many dancers and performers applied his system but encouraged originality and a full body work out! Tranter Pilates will bring your body back to a level of optimal functional fitness. Functional fitness focuses on precise alignment and control of the body throughout various kinds of movement. The goal is to teach efficient movement patterns with good joint alignment, correct posture, and body control. Athletes and non-athletes alike benefit tremendously from this approach. Monica Tranter Pilates functional fitness exercises will work on muscular imbalances throughout your body to allow you to perform the daily tasks of the day such as vacuuming, raking leaves, shoveling, washing the dishes, and driving. We also customize approaches for athletes to help them develop balanced, strong and flexible movement that originates in the core area of the body.   

The body works in a three dimensional environment: up, down, side to side, forward and back and in any combination. In other words, you may have to reach, bend, stretch, twist and maintain your balance all at the same time in order to perform a certain task. The Tranter Pilates Method sequence of exercise will help reconnect the mind to the muscle, teaching each group to work evenly, efficiently and at its own pace. Incorporating the practice to a balanced mind to muscle connection whatever your Pilates goals are can be achieved!

Monica began her Pilates training due to a back injury while her professional dance career was blooming. Pilates and the idea of finding the function in her dysfunction helped mold and develop her technique. With the guidance and support of her mentor and teacher Lawrence Hayward, she has created a classical Pilates framework with a morphe of modern to add versatility and variety to her classes. Monica continues to learn from her students, her own body limitations and adapt her programming to help you gain full function, alignment and lean muscle mass that will allow you to carry out any daily activity with the Pilates training and muscle memory at work without having to think about it.
